- Description
- Brief description of the data set: This is the complete data set from a RCT examining the effect of preoperative forced air warming and warmed intraoperative irrigation solution, alone and in combination, on postoperative temperature, thermal comfort, and total recovery time in adult patients undergoing elective arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The trial used a randomised 2 x 2 factorial design. Participants were allocated to one of four groups: Group one received preoperative warming with a forced air warming device; group two received warmed intraoperative irrigation solutions; group three received both preoperative warming and warmed intraoperative irrigation solutions; and group four received neither intervention. Description of the cohort: Participants were eligible for the trial if they were over 18 years; undergoing elective arthroscopic shoulder surgery; classified as American Society of Anaesthesiologists grade I-III; and have a body mass index between 18.5 and 40. Patients were excluded if they had a preoperative temperature above 37.5°C or were unable to speak or understand English. This data set contains 108 adult patients (73 male and 35 female) with a median age was 44 (range 18 to 87) and a median BMI of 27 (range 19 to 44). Number of participants: 108. Geography of participants: All participants were recruited at a hospital in Sydney Australian. Participants may have come from other areas of the state/ country but this is not captured in this data set. Variable description: Date of birth; ASA grade; gender; height; weight; BMI; type of anaesthetic; OR in time; OR out time; nausea; vomiting; pain; shivering; recovery time in; recovery time out; environmental temperature (pre anaesthetic room, operating room, recovery room); body temperature (on admission, pre-anaesthetic, on induction, on admission to recovery, after 20 min in recovery, at discharge from recovery); thermal comfort score (on admission; pre-anaesthetic; on admission to recovery, after 20 min in recovery, at discharge from recovery); active warming (preoperatively, postoperatively); fluid warming intraoperatively; volume of irrigation fluid used. Timespan: Data collected between Jan 2011 to Feb 2012. Size: 32 KB Software used: Excel file.
